Mindstorms Alpha Rex Humanoid Robot

I had some time yesterday, so I decided to build the Alpha Rex Humanoid Bot from the instructions that came with the Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 Box (#8547). Apart from using nearly every single piece from the box, the robot itself is more like a toy than a journey into robotics.

This is a humanoid Robot, means that it walks on two legs. It walks, ok – but it’s pretty much uncontrollable where it goes ;-). The construction of the legs is interesting but everything else from the instructions, for example the arms and head, is more “Transformers Style”: Looks fancy but doesn’t have a real function. Also the construction details for moving the arms is putting a lot of pressure on the motor – I disabled the routines in the program completely to make sure the motor and the gears are surviving the demo.

In summary, the build itself is nice, you learn a lot of techniques to use the parts but from a robotic standpoint, you don’t learn that much.

This robot can be built with the basic Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0. Starter Box:
